Large Signed Japanese Satsuma Bowl By The Renowned Master Shizan, Meiji Period

Artist: Satsuma

This large Japanese Satsuma bowl by the renowned master Shizan is a superb Meiji-period decorative work with the scale, elegance and painterly quality to function as a true focal point in an interior. Measuring 25 cm across, with a softly lobed rim and generous rounded body, it has the presence of an important display piece and immediately commands attention.

The interior is centred by a graceful scene of court ladies beside a boat, bridge, waterfall and temple architecture, while the exterior unfolds with a panoramic landscape of bijin, pavilions, flowering trees and distant hills. The painting is of particularly high quality. Faces are delicately rendered, robes are richly patterned, and the architecture and landscape are articulated with refined gilding and softly toned enamels over a fine crackled ivory ground. The black-and-gold border gives the design additional strength and polish.

The base bears the Shimazu crest above the signature 志山, read as Shizan, a respected and collectable Satsuma master admired for the elegance and finish of his work. The bowl belongs firmly to the Kyoto Satsuma tradition, known for its poetic female subjects, refined landscape compositions and decorative sophistication.

Condition is excellent. The bowl has been examined under UV light and shows no restoration, no overpainting and no UV-detected repairs. There are no visible structural defects, the gilding remains bright, and the enamel painting remains crisp and fresh. Pieces of this scale and quality are increasingly difficult to find in such well-preserved condition. The carved wooden stand is included and displays the bowl beautifully.

For designers, this is the kind of object that can anchor a room with immediate effect — an interior accent of real authority and beauty. For collectors, it offers signature, scale, painterly quality and excellent condition in one highly desirable piece. Fine signed Satsuma continues to attract serious attention, and quality examples such as this remain both decorative and investment-worthy.
