Japan, Meiji period, circa 1890. A very high-quality Satsuma plate, decorated with a lush princely garden scene: pavilions, bridges, flowering vegetation, and numerous figures in kimono. Extremely fine painting in polychrome overglaze enamels, enriched with matte and burnished gold with microscopic stippling. On the reverse, the famous Meizan mark (明山) in gold on a black cartouche with softened corners. Dimensions: diameter approx. 21.3 cm; height approx. 2.5 cm. Weight: approx. 423 g. Technique and materials: Satsuma stoneware with a crackled ivory glaze; overglaze enamels; abundant gilding. Historical context: At the height of Meiji exports, works associated with the Meizan name were prized by European connoisseurs for their refinement and virtuosity. Condition: excellent. UV testing reveals no restoration, repainting, or re-gilding; only very slight signs of use at the edge.
