Henri Jacot Paris Eight-day Striking Carriage Clock With Original Travel Case

Artist: Henri Jacot

This late 19th / early 20th century French carriage clock is a particularly appealing example of the classic corniche model, made in Paris by Henri Jacot, a maker long admired for the quality and refinement of his carriage clocks. It combines elegant architectural design with practical horology: an eight-day movement, a working hour-striking mechanism and its original travelling case.

The gilt brass case has a moulded cornice, stepped base, shaped bracket feet and a hinged faceted handle. Thick bevelled glass panels to all sides give the clock a bright, open presence, while the bevelled top glass reveals the platform lever escapement. The proportions are balanced and restrained, exactly the qualities that make the corniche form so enduringly attractive in both traditional and modern interiors.

The white enamel dial with Roman numerals, minute track and blued steel spade hands is clean and classic. The twin-train movement runs for eight days and strikes the hours on a gong. At the time of cataloguing, the clock is running correctly, keeping good time and the striking train is functioning properly.

The rear plate is stamped MADE IN PARIS and carries the Henri Jacot “H&J” parrot trademark, numbered 16540. These marks firmly identify the clock as a genuine Paris example by one of the best-known carriage clock makers of the period.

The original leather travelling case survives with the clock, complete with glazed front flap, carrying strap and rich purple silk velvet lining. It shows wear and losses consistent with age and use, yet remains structurally sound and adds greatly to the completeness and authenticity of the piece.

An elegant and very usable antique clock by a respected Paris maker, equally suitable for a serious collection, a study, or an interior where original mechanical objects are appreciated.
