Fine Satsuma Earthenware Ewer. Japan, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century.
Artist: Satsuma
The ewer is made of fine Satsuma earthenware, decorated with polychrome enamels and gold on a slightly crackled cream glaze. Exceptionally for a Satsuma piece, the artist used silver in the decoration; these are the areas that have acquired this lovely gray, almost black hue, the silver having oxidized over time. Fortunately, the ewer has retained its lid, which is rare. The lid is broken at its unglazed base, and this damage, invisible from the outside, does not detract from the object's aesthetic appeal. No restoration. Pours perfectly. Height 16 cm. Signed with two hallmarks.
