Pair Of Fan-shaped Dishes. Fukagawa Kilns, Japan. Circa 1900
Artist: Fukagawa
A pair of Japanese porcelain plates from Fukagawa, fan-shaped. Decorated in underglaze blue and polychrome glazes with flowers, foliage, and reserved areas, entirely hand-painted. The regular geometric background is also hand-painted. This detail is a significant indicator of quality. On more common and/or later Japanese porcelain, such intricate designs are typically produced by printing or transfer, and may be finished by hand afterward. Here, however, the decision to paint even the most intricate geometric motifs by hand attests to particularly meticulous craftsmanship.
This quality of execution is characteristic of the fine Fukagawa pieces from the Meiji period, circa 1900.
