Rectangular wooden box with mirror-black lacquer, featuring two cranes (tsuru) in maki-e lacquer on the lid against a nashiji landscape background. The reverse side features, centered, three fans (ogi) and a plum branch on a “pear-patterned” background in nashiji lacquer. One of the two open fans depicts a lakeside scene, while the other shows bamboo shoots.
The interior is divided into three removable compartments. The middle section features a large rectangular inkstone (suzuri), topped by a small round gilded copper water pot (mizuire) holding the dropper (suiteki) used to moisten the stone.
