Antique Vietnamese Bien Hoa Black & White Stoneware Vase, Dragon & Carp, C20th

A large antique Vietnamese glazed stoneware vase made at Biên Hòa during the French Indochina period, circa 1930–1950.

The globular body and elongated cylindrical neck are decorated with a powerful dragon and a large carp among stylised clouds and waves. The decoration is finely incised and modelled in low relief, picked out in a lustrous black glaze against a finely crackled ivory-white ground.

The subject refers to the traditional Asian legend of the carp that successfully passes through the Dragon Gate and transforms into a dragon. It symbolises perseverance, ambition, success and advancement.

A substantial and particularly decorative example of early-20th-century Vietnamese Biên Hòa art pottery.
