HIKESHI BANTEN - Japanese firefighter’s kimono jacket, made of thick, quilted cotton fabric with sashiko stitching, designed to be filled with water to protect the wearer from the heat of the flames.
It is decorated using the “tsutsugaki” technique (a freehand resist dyeing process on an indigo background) with a motif of a samurai brandishing his katana.
Very good overall condition, with slight signs of wear at the nape of the neck.

Notes: Firefighters played a vital role in Edo-period cities, which were regularly devastated by fires. The rudimentary equipment they used during their operations meant they were seen as true heroes willing to sacrifice themselves for the community.
