Ceremonial Sarong Rug, Late 19th Century, Early 20th Century, Sumatra, Indonesia

Artist: Abung
Sarong rug from the Lampung region on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The basic fabric is a cotton ikat woven with red and blue stripes. Then it was decorated with rows of repeated patterns in gold thread.
This type of textile, used by women, was taken out during ceremonies or festivities. Sarong rugs were a way for the wearer to display their wealth and social status.
This one was framed on a wooden structure.
Good condition despite some age-related wear. Nice collector's item.
