"Flat Mask, Eastern Pende People, Drc."
A mask with a geometric structure. The upper part of the mask is distinguished by its fan-shaped, architectural construction, organized around a strongly marked central axis that continues with the nasal bridge. Two symmetrical oblique bands, forming a V-shaped motif, structure the broadened forehead into clearly defined sloping planes. The rectangular eyes are openwork, while the mouth, treated as a projecting cubic volume, bears a white cruciform marking. The cheeks are adorned with incised triangular motifs that reinforce the rhythmic effect of the surface.
The ochre and black polychromy conforms to Pende pictorial traditions. Its sophisticated geometry and cubist appearance bring it closer to the Bembe and Lega stylistic areas, while remaining structurally rooted in the Eastern Pende aesthetic.
This type of flat mask was worn for dancing during the investiture celebrations of chiefs.
Wood with a patina from use, pigments.
Height: 28 cm.
Mid-20th century.
