Old Fabric Sarong Tapis From Sumatra
The tapis is a traditional Indonesian weave, originating from Lampung, south of the island of Sumatra.
This weaving work is, generally, carried out by women: they weave - cotton and metal threads on traditional looms - handwoven fabric being mainly used to make ceremonial clothing.
The fabric on sale here dates from the middle of the 20th century. It is currently placed in a frame, fixed with small nails but, the frame having no value, will be demolished and the fabric will be shipped folded in a small package, tiny holes where the nails were located will therefore be visible around the edge.
