Powdered Mauve Silk Kimono – Japan – XX
Women’s silk kimono, classified as a Tsukesage or Hōmongi (formal visiting garments characterized by an asymmetrical, upward-sloping pattern placement). The garment features a dominant powdery mauve hue. The tone darkens toward the lower hem using a continuous gradient dyeing technique (bokashi), reaching a muted violet shade at the base to add depth to the overall design.
Iconographic AnalysisThe design is deliberately minimalist, focusing on isolated elements arranged on the left chest/shoulder and the lower panel, in keeping with the codes of understated elegance (iki).
The Pouch (Kinchaku / Shifuku): The medallions depict traditional Japanese pouches made of precious fabric, closed with knotted cords. This is a reference to shifuku, the protective pouches used for utensils during the tea ceremony (chanoyu).
Inner Motifs (Kisshōmon): The interior of these pouches features classic auspicious motifs rendered in metallic highlights:
Upper medallion: A tortoise-shell pattern (Kikkō) enclosing floral motifs, an ancient geometric symbol associated with Bishamonten’s armor and representing longevity.
Lower medallions: Plants associated with the cold seasons, notably plum blossoms (Ume) and bamboo leaves (Sasa), allegories of resilience in the face of adversity. A third pouch features plant scrollwork (Karakusa), symbols of continued prosperity.
Material: Silk (outer fabric and lining). Soft, matte texture characteristic of silk crepe (chirimen).
Decorative technique: Gradient dyeing and application of pigments and metallic powders (shades of gold, silver, and copper), creating a play of reflections on the matte surface of the silk.
Lining: Plain white silk (uraji).
