Salmon-colored Silk Kimono, Decorated With Cranes And Bamboo, Signed – Japan, 20th Century

A Japanese silk kimono in a powdery salmon-pink color, corresponding to the style of ceremonial garments known as Houmongi or Irotomesode (characterized by standard-length sleeves and ornamentation primarily located on the lower portion).

The piece is immediately recognizable by the presence of an artist’s or dye workshop seal stamped in red ink (hanko) on the lower left front panel (okumi). This mark attests to high-quality craftsmanship. The design extends continuously along the hem (suso-moyo), visible in the overview of the back.

Iconographic Analysis

The composition offers a strong graphic contrast between the softness of the pastel background and the vivid colors of the plant and animal motifs.

  • The Japanese Cranes (Tanchōzuru): A central motif rendered with great finesse. Captured in mid-flight in dynamic poses, their plumage combines white with shades of bright pink on the wings and hints of blue-black. The characteristic red crown is clearly defined. In Japanese tradition, the crane is the sacred symbol of longevity, purity, and marital fidelity.

  • Bamboo (Take): Appearing in the background behind the birds, it is graphically stylized in shades of deep blue and turquoise. Bamboo embodies flexibility, strength, and resilience in the face of the elements.

  • The Lattice/Geometric Fence Motif (Higaki): At the base of the garment, a crisscrossing architectural structure in purple and blue serves as the foundation for the composition, anchoring the natural landscape within an orderly perspective. Subtle floral motifs (chrysanthemums) complete the design at the hem.
