Large Urushi Lacquer Tray Decorated With Pine Trees And Birds - Japan, Meiji Period Circa 1900
Large rectangular tray with slightly curved edges, in deep black Urushi lacquered wood. The finely executed decoration perfectly illustrates the art of Maki-e from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912).
The central scene depicts a Japanese pine (Matsu), a symbol of longevity, whose twisted trunk and needles are treated in light relief (Taka Maki-e). Two birds in flight and floral motifs complete this naturalistic composition. The artist has used a refined palette of gilding and green lacquer highlights, creating a striking contrast with the glossy black background.
The work on textures, particularly on the pine bark and the birds' plumage, testifies to the high technical quality craftsmanship typical of late 19th-century export workshops.
