Large Silk Kimono (furisode), Peacock And Peony Motif – Japan, 20th Century
An important Japanese long-sleeved silk kimono, characteristic of the furisode type. The piece features a pale pink background adorned with rich, asymmetrical polychrome ornamentation in a continuous pattern (eba-moyo), intensifying toward the lower part of the garment. The lower hem is lightly padded (fuki technique), designed to add weight to the drape of the fabric, a typical attribute of formal ceremonial or theatrical kimonos.
The decoration is structured around a classic naturalistic composition, segmented by imposing bands of stylized mist (kasumi) in deep magenta applied in a gradient effect (bokashi).
The Peacock (Kujaku): The central motif of the composition, the bird is rendered with great anatomical precision. The feathers feature an alternating deep cobalt blue on the neck and shades of bronze, gray, and brown for the tail, offering a strong chromatic contrast against the pastel background. The peacock is traditionally associated with love, good fortune, and dignity.
Flora (The Four Seasons Aesthetic):
Peonies (Botan): Large white flowers with subtly pink centers, symbolizing wealth and nobility, rendered here with a pronounced sense of volume.
Cherry Blossoms (Sakura) & Plum Blossoms (Ume): Flowering branches stretching across the upper section and sleeves, marking the renewal of spring.
Chrysanthemums (Kiku) & Bamboo (Sasa): Botanicals visible at the base, respectively symbolizing longevity and resilience.
