19th Century Silver On Brass Marquetry Top, Damask, Syria, Very Good Condition

Artist: Atelier Syrien

In the East, there are platters and platters, and this is a work of goldsmith,
a choice piece, which leaves no room for doubt when it comes to the dexterity of its creator.
The metals are perfectly edge to edge without burrs, which is what makes the big difference, in this age-old art.
(compared to hastily made pieces).

Silver marquetry serving tray, damasquine.
Nineteenth-century Syria.
Silver and copper on brass.
Arabic Koran verses
Oriental serving tea tray.
Brass and silver and copper marquetry.
Decorated with Arabic Thuluth calligraphy (verses from the Qur'an)
Epoque 1850 - 1880

## A large central medallion extended by two halberd-shaped pendants.
Silver foliage decoration encircled by polished brass.
Four rondos inscribed with calligraphy .
Two lattice friezes encircle the bottom of the tray like braids, accompanying calligraphy in broad thuluth script separated by rondos in the widths, lengths and angles.
On the bias, arabesque decoration and arrowheads encircle the entire bottom.
On the rim a wide band separated by rondos of six-pointed stars and stylized flowers.
The whole is the representation of a garden and basin, a reminder of paradise, an oriental representation found in the art of carpets, leather, and architecture.

Very rich damascene decoration with silver and copper inlays, sculpted and calligraphic decorations in thuluth of the highest quality.

# Damascene work is a delicate technique of inlaying small threads of gold or silver into a metal object.
This technique spread from Damascus to Toledo and India.
Some pieces are made of iron, such as Sultan Barsbay's gold damascene helmet. On copper or bronze objects, characters or decorative motifs are damascened in silver.

Pure copper is the origin of the alloys bronze and brass.
It has been shaped by repoussé in all eras, but has often been gilded, enamelled, covered or inlaid with other materials like our model.
It was used extensively in the manufacture of everyday objects.
Boiler-making encompasses this type of production and certain countries, such as those of the Muslim East, have become masters in the field.
