Crafted from carved wood, this owl-shaped form was covered with layers of damp paper, which dried and hardened into a hollow shell. Once dried, the paper-mâché owl was removed, painted, lacquered, and sold—often as traditional toys or decorative trinkets.
These owl figures carry cultural significance—considered symbols of good luck and wisdom in Myanmar, they were popular as gifts and home décor.
I have included a photo of an example of a lacquer owl using this technique - this one is fairly modern I was unable to find and antique example.
