Burmese Kammavaca Manuscript, Gilt Lacquer, 19th Century. Prayer Sutras Buddhist Monastery.

An exceptional 19th-century Burmese Kammavaca manuscript from Mandalay, produced during the late Konbaung Dynasty (circa 1850–1900). This complete and authentic set includes two richly decorated wooden covers and a full suite of gilded manuscript leaves, traditionally used in Theravāda Buddhist monastic ordination ceremonies (upasampadā).

Features:

  • Two original lacquered and gilded wooden covers, intricately incised with floral and mythological scenes using the shwezawa technique (gilt-on-lacquer).

  • Multiple manuscript folios (each approx. 59 × 14.5 cm), written in Pali using Burmese script, with black lacquered characters on a gold background. Each folio is framed by detailed floral borders and adorned with small guardian or deity figures at the ends.

  • Complete and in well-preserved condition, with minor wear consistent with age and devotional use. Binding holes remain visible, as is typical of traditionally strung sets. There is some wear most noticeable on the inside of one cover.

These manuscripts were often commissioned as meritorious gifts to monasteries and represent the apex of Burmese Buddhist manuscript craftsmanship.
