Antique Burmese Tattooing Needle, Bronze & Brass, 19th Century, Myanmar, 42 Cm

An unusual antique Burmese (Myanmar) tattooing implement, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Measuring an impressive 42 cm in length, this traditional tattooing instrument is constructed in two detachable sections, with a long copper-alloy shaft, a decorative weighted terminal surmounted by a finely detailed lotus-bud finial, and a sharply pointed tattooing stylus.

Of particular interest is the unusual working point, which is formed with numerous fine longitudinal channels, creating a distinctive comb-like appearance. These channels appear to have been designed to retain and deliver tattoo pigment during use.

Traces of old dark pigment remain within the channels and around the working end, providing interesting evidence of the instrument's original function.

Tattooing has a long history in Burma, where elaborate tattoos were associated with protection, spiritual beliefs, personal identity and traditional cultural practices.

The instrument retains an attractive aged patina, with the different copper alloys displaying warm tones acquired over many years.

A fascinating and unusual piece of Southeast Asian ethnographic art, of interest to collectors of Burmese antiques, traditional tattooing equipment and Asian tribal art.

Origin: Burma (Myanmar), possibly Shan.

Period: Late 19th to early 20th century.

Length: 42 cm.

Condition: Good antique condition, with age-related patina and traces of old pigment.
