Antique Thai Bronze Buddha Head, Sukhothai Style, Late Ayutthaya–early Rattanakosin, 18th–19th

An antique Thai bronze Buddha head, height 17.8 cm, made in the Sukhothai tradition and dating to the late Ayutthaya to early Rattanakosin period (18th–19th century).

This antique Buddha head shows the serene, meditative expression characteristic of Thai sculpture, with arched eyebrows that flow into the bridge of the nose. The hair is formed from tight snail-shell curls, rising to a tall flame ushnisha. The elongated earlobes are strongly modelled and stand slightly away from the head, a typical feature of period Thai bronzes.

Traces of original gilding remain on the curls, facial features and around the neck. These highlight the attractive mottled green and brown patina developed through long age and devotion. Cast by the lost-wax process and hollow inside, this antique bronze head would originally have formed part of a complete standing or seated Buddha figure.

Good, stable antique condition with age-related surface wear, old losses and distortion around the break at the neck, minor casting flaws and natural encrustations, all consistent with age.
