Antique Chinese Bronze Sculpture Elephant Bridge, Carved Hardwood Stand, 19th Century

A most unusual and charming antique Chinese bronze group depicting five elephants proceeding across an arched bridge, Qing dynasty, 19th century.

Each elephant is individually modelled in a different pose, with a raised, lowered or curled trunk, and displays considerable character and finely observed detail.

The bronze group rests upon its original intricately carved hardwood stand, representing a rocky landscape with pierced grottoes, flowering plants, birds and small animals. Particularly engaging is the scene of a hawk confronting or pursuing a rat.

The combination of five bronze elephants crossing a bridge and an elaborate carved hardwood landscape is exceptionally uncommon. Indeed, this is probably the first Chinese bronze elephant bridge of this type that I have encountered in more than fifty years in the antiques business.

Wonderful quality throughout and a highly decorative, immensely charming example of 19th-century Chinese bronze work.
