Japanese Buddhist Bronze Bell, Tongdosa Temple, Korea, Dated 1972

A Japanese bronze Buddhist temple bell of traditional Korean form, dated 1972.

The bell is cast with horizontal bands, panels of raised bosses and a decorative double-dragon suspension loop. Two vertical inscriptions provide its date and its association with Tongdosa, one of Korea’s most important Buddhist temples.

Height 15.8 cm

The dated inscription reads:

昭和四十七年九月吉祥日

“An auspicious day in September, Shōwa 47.”

Shōwa 47 corresponds to 1972.

The second inscription reads:

朝鮮慶尚南道梁山郡靈鷲山通度寺

“Tongdosa Temple, Mount Yeongchuk, Yangsan County, South Gyeongsang Province, Korea.”

Although the bell commemorates the Korean temple of Tongdosa, the use of the Japanese Shōwa calendar indicates that it was most probably made in Japan, perhaps as a commemorative piece or souvenir for a Japanese visitor or pilgrim.
