Antique Tortoiseshell Snuffbox, St. Helena, Napoleon's Exile, 19th Century

A fine antique tortoiseshell snuff box of rectangular form, measuring 9.8 cm in width and dating to the 19th century.

The lid is beautifully decorated with an oval engraved panel depicting a detailed coastal view titled “St Helena,” showing ships in the harbour with buildings and mountainous landscape beyond. The surrounding ground is worked in a textured pattern, providing a pleasing contrast to the finely engraved central scene.

Snuff boxes of this type were popular souvenirs, particularly depicting notable or remote locations such as Saint Helena, famously associated with the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The box opens on its original hinge and retains a rich, deep colour typical of aged tortoiseshell.

Condition: Good antique condition overall, with some chips and losses to the interior and to the back as shown in the photographs.
