Antique Chinese Porcelain Ginger Jar, Herons & Lotus, Wang Bing Rong Style, C.1900

A charming antique Chinese porcelain ginger jar and cover, dating from the late Qing dynasty, circa 1890–1900.

Of rounded form, the ginger jar and its original fitted cover are covered with a rich green glaze and decorated in applied high relief with herons among lotus flowers, leaves, seed pods and aquatic plants. The decoration is picked out in contrasting cream, yellow, brown and pale green glazes.

The strongly modelled naturalistic decoration is in the distinctive style associated with the celebrated Chinese porcelain artist Wang Bing Rong, whose name is also frequently written Wang Bingrong. This example is unmarked and is therefore described as being in his style rather than attributed directly to him.
