Antique bronze elephant bell, Thailand, dating from the 18th century.

This substantial cast bronze bell features a marvelous, particularly rich antique patina, blending brown and reddish hues with a very pronounced verdigris. The body is decorated with bands, medallions, and a row of beads, while the upper portion is adorned with a frieze of stylized lotus leaves. The openwork handle is framed by other stylized plant motifs.

A very similar Thai bronze elephant bell, also measuring 20 cm in height, was sold by Tajan, Paris, at its Asian Art auction on October 8, 2015, lot 194. The Tajan example was also cataloged as dating from the 18th century.
