Antique Tibetan Derge Silver-inlaid Iron Travelling Bowl Case, 17th–18th Century

An antique Tibetan travelling bowl case from Derge in Eastern Tibet, dating to the 17th–18th century.

Forged from iron, the circular case is extensively decorated with silver inlay, finely worked with lotus flowers, scrolling foliage and spiral borders. The hinged cover has a raised central medallion, while the case retains its original fastening clasp and two rectangular side handles through which a carrying strap could be passed.

These sturdy travelling cases were made to protect valuable wooden, porcelain or jade bowls belonging to Tibetan nobles, senior members of the clergy and prosperous travellers. The interior would originally have been fitted with a protective textile or felt lining. Comparable Derge bowl cases are preserved in the collections of Tibet House US and the National Palace Museum, Taipei.

The original bowl and textile lining are no longer present.

Condition: Good condition. There is some oxidation and wear, with losses to the silver inlay, all clearly illustrated in the photographs.

Period: 17th–18th century.

Origin: Derge, Eastern Tibet.

Diameter: 15.8 cm.
