Antique Tibetan Silver & Leather Chuckmuck Tinder Pouch With Deer, C19th

An unusual antique Tibetan chuckmuck or tinder pouch dating from the 19th century.

The pouch is made from black leather and embellished with finely worked solid silver panels. The silver openwork decoration depicts a pair of recumbent deer surrounded by scrolling foliage, with a central silver cartouche and small copper rivets providing an attractive contrast.

A curved iron fire steel is incorporated along the lower edge. When struck with a piece of flint, this produced the sparks needed to ignite tinder, which would have been carried inside the leather pouch. Chuckmucks were practical everyday objects in Tibet and the Himalayan region, but their elaborate metalwork also made them personal ornaments and symbols of status.

Complete with its brass suspension fitting, allowing it to be worn from a belt. A particularly decorative example of Tibetan ethnographic metalwork and traditional fire-making equipment.
