Lee Yee Hing Sterling Silver Coin-inset Ashtray With Trade Dollar, C.1920
A rare example of Hong Kong colonial silver, this sterling silver ashtray was produced by Lee Yee Hing around 1920 and incorporates an authentic 1899 British Trade Dollar at its centre.
The circular body is fitted with three cigarette rests and a broad polished rim. The inset coin is one of the most recognisable silver dollars used throughout Hong Kong, China and the Straits Settlements during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as the “Standing Britannia” dollar, it depicts Britannia holding a trident and a shield bearing the Union Flag. The coin was struck in .900 silver to a weight of 26.95 grams at the Bombay Mint.
The underside reveals the reverse of the Trade Dollar with the Chinese longevity symbol Shou and multilingual inscriptions denoting “One Dollar”. Together, these elements reflect the unique cultural identity of colonial Hong Kong.
Lee Yee Hing was a recognised Hong Kong silversmith active circa 1900–1940. Pieces bearing the firm's mark are increasingly collected within the field of Hong Kong colonial silver and Chinese Export silver. An unusual and well-documented colonial silver object with strong collector appeal.
