Beautiful and rare Japanese pendant carved from a walnut, it depict a Buddhist temple and a figure of Buddha surrounded by two Lohans; a second figure of Buddha is suspended inside the nut.
The lohans, or arhat in Sanskrit, which can be translated as “saint”, in ancient Buddhism designates the highest stage in religious progression for followers of the Small Vehicle; The Buddha is said to have instructed 18 lohans to protect the Law and keep it after his death, without entering nirvāna, until the appearance of a new Buddha (Buddha).
As a pendant, inside is a small oblong statuette depicting a second representation of Buddha and bearing a signature on the back.
The nut is also signed with two kanjis (see photo).
