Antique Indian Solid Silver Cheroot, Visiting & Business Card Case, C19th

A very good-quality antique Indian solid silver cheroot case, dating from the late 19th century.

Both sides are richly worked in high repoussé with wonderfully detailed jungle scenes populated by elephants, lions, deer and other wild animals among trees and vegetation. The decoration is particularly deep and crisp, with contrasting chased and textured backgrounds. The case opens by means of a hinged lid and retains its original internal elastic retaining bands.

Although this handsome silver case started life as a cheroot case, its generous dimensions make it equally suitable for use today as an unusual and impressive visiting card or business card holder.

Indian silver of this quality and with such extensive animal decoration is highly collectable.
