Celepa Antique

Antique brass set including betel nut box and lime container
This handcrafted brass set uses traditional metalworking techniques, such as repoussé and chasing, to bring out the elaborate floral patterns on the surface. The deep golden-brown patina emphasizes the age and authenticity of the piece
The larger vessel held betel leaves (sirih) or sliced areca nuts (pinang). It features a hinged lid decorated with finely embossed floral arabesques and traditional plant motifs common in Sumatran craftsmanship
The smaller, accompanying vessel was specially designed to hold quicklime. Lime acts as an essential chemical activator when betel quid is chewed, releasing the slightly stimulating properties of areca nut. Its fluted pumpkin shape is a classic style.
The inner edges and internal surfaces feature a distinct, contrasting silver color. This indicates that the brass was originally washed or plated with coin silver to prevent wet lime paste (kapur) and the acidic components of betel from corroding the raw copper alloy.
The chain enabled the user to securely attach the lime container directly to the main box, thus avoiding losing the small lid when traveling or when offering a chew to guests.
Large container: 9 cm wide, 7 cm deep
Small container: 5 cm wide, 3 cm deep
