A large Japanese Satsuma display vase of elegant ovoid form, set against a deep cobalt-blue ground and reserved with finely painted narrative cartouches. The principal panels portray refined court ladies and attendants in graceful procession, balanced by bamboo and garden motifs. The ivory-toned Satsuma body shows a fine, even crackle, softening the painted scenes and enhancing their depth.
The decorative quality lies in the surface work. Kimono patterns are constructed with dense moriage using raised gilt dots and beaded outlines to form textured floral designs and borders, with controlled gold pointwork across foliage and blossoms. The painting remains careful and legible, with delicately drawn faces and clearly differentiated garments throughout.
The cobalt ground is glossy and clean, framing the reserves and enriched with ornamental detailing at the shoulder and neck. A highly attractive collector’s vase of quality late Meiji Satsuma decoration with strong visual presence.
Dimensions: Height 32.5 cm; diameter 17.5 cm. Weight 1817 g.
