"Paris Bourdois & Bloch Biscuit-lace Group “duo” (singer & Guitarist), C.1868"
Elegant French hard-paste porcelain group, Bourdois
& Bloch, c.1868. The singer holds a sheet reading DUO; the guitarist plays
beside her. Glazed bodies with applied biscuit lace made by the French
“porcelain lace” process; rich hand enamels and neat gilding on a rococo scroll
base. Underside with underglaze crossed-swords mark with letters, linked to the
Bourdois & Bloch company; likely Limoges body decorated in their Paris
atelier. The
Parisian atelier Bourdois & Bloch, founded by Eugène Bloch as Bloch &
Cie around 1848, flourished during the Second Empire (1852-1870) in partnership
with Gustave Bourdois. Specializing in the artistic painting of Limoges
porcelain, the workshop created exclusive luxury items with virtuoso painting
and gilding, becoming a benchmark of taste for Parisian bourgeoisie.
Collectors will value the excellent preservation of the delicate biscuit
lace and, especially, the fully intact guitar — a vulnerable detail seldom
surviving.
Condition: loss to the little finger of the
guitarist’s right hand; small losses to lace; otherwise excellent with fresh
colors and gilding, no chips or cracks.
