"Rare Royal Doulton Mandarin Ware Vase, Yellow Ground, Attributed R. Allen, C.1920"
A rare Art Deco vase from Royal Doulton’s celebrated
Mandarin Ware series, circa 1920. Beautifully potted and hand-painted with bold
polychrome floral enamels on a vibrant yellow ground, finished with the
signature black-glazed rim—a hallmark of the line developed by principal
designer Robert Allen. The Mandarin Ware collection, renowned for its rich
colors, durable decoration, and complex hand-painting, was exhibited
internationally and exported to Europe and the USA. The bright yellow ground places this example
within the highly collectible Imperial Chinese Yellow line of Royal Doulton Mandarin Ware.
Marked to the base with the Royal Doulton green factory mark and an
impressed model number. Although unsigned, the vase is almost certainly based
on a design by Robert Allen. The vivid yellow ground, striking florals, and
characteristic black-glazed rim are all typical of Allen’s work in the 1920s. A
registration number (RN) is also present, confirming this vase as part of a
protected design line.
This example is of exceptional rarity and museum quality—surviving
Mandarin Ware vases with yellow ground are especially sought after and rarely
found in this condition.
