"Meissen Ribbed Porcelain Jug, Handpainted Birds & Insects, Mid-19th Century"
Meissen porcelain jug, mid-19th century. Ribbed,
bulbous body with flared rim and wide, flat shoulder. Relief band with
geometric cross-hatch and meander ornament around the neck. Curved branch
handle with applied gold petals. Spout decorated with gold stylized leaves. Each side decorated with two birds
on a branch, surrounded by insects: beetles, butterflies, bees. Continues the
Meissen “Naturalistic Birds and Insects” series first created after the 1740s
and produced in small numbers through the 19th century. Marked
underglaze blue crossed swords to base.
These pieces are rare and collectible, especially in this condition.
