True First Edition Bakst The Story Of His Life Berlin 1922 Copy No 11
A highly decorative and historically significant true First Edition of Bakst. The Story of Leon Bakst’s Life. Published in Berlin in 1922 by Alexander Kogan’s Russian Art publishing house, this is the absolute original imprint, preceding all later London and Paris reissues.
The book was printed by Dr. Selle & Co. A.G., Berlin (a firm operating from 1921 to 1932) at the very beginning of their history. Produced during the severe economic conditions of 1922 Germany, it was executed as a high-end, hand-crafted bibliophile object. This is Copy No. 11 of a strict limitation of 600 copies (being one of 300 issued for Great Britain and the Colonies).
The folio contains 240 pages and 68 plates (52 in colour), including a frontispiece portrait of Bakst by Amedeo Modigliani. It is printed on heavy-stock textured handmade watercolour paper (type of Fabriano) with uncut edges and retains its rare original slipcase.
It bears a unique dedication: “Dem hochverehrten Herrn E. Buren zur freundlichen Erinnerung. London 6/5–1925. Wladimir Poliakoff.” Poliakoff (1890–1952) was a WWI pilot, Russian opera singer, and the father of Marina Vlady.
