Chinese Nephrite Archaistic Scholar’s Cup With Taotie Handles C. 1900–1910

An elegant Chinese nephrite scholar’s cup dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1910. The vessel is carved in archaistic form with a flared rim, rounded body and paired taotie-mask handles inspired by ancient Chinese ritual bronzes. Pieces of this type were created for cabinet interiors, scholars’ desks and refined decorative display.

The translucent natural nephrite displays attractive olive, honey-yellow and smoky black tones throughout the stone. When illuminated, the thinner areas reveal fine translucency and natural internal structure. The visible dark areas and linear markings are natural mineral inclusions within the nephrite.

The underside retains faint uneven tool marks associated with traditional hand-finishing, while the handle perforations display slight irregularities consistent with hand-tool workmanship. The soft hand-polished surface differs noticeably from the highly reflective finish commonly found on later decorative carvings. Historically, archaistic jade vessels became associated with scholarship, antiquity and refined collector’s taste. By the early Republic period, such cabinet-scale carvings were highly appreciated both within China and by Western collectors of Asian works of art.

A refined and highly decorative example of early 20th-century Chinese jade carving with strong cabinet presence.
