Indian Box Made Of 925 Sterling Silver And Enamel With Elephant Design, 20th Century

A significant antique Indian box made of sterling silver, its lid adorned with a remarkable polychrome enamel decoration.

The central scene depicts a richly decked ceremonial elephant advancing beneath a tree in bloom. Its saddlecloth is decorated with floral, geometric, and latticework motifs, highlighted by delicate silver lines. The luminous green background brings out a particularly rich palette combining deep blue, pink, black, yellow, and white.

The composition is framed by a wide floral border in shades of blue and gold on a dark eggplant background. The finely textured silver work beneath the enamel lends the surface depth, relief, and luminosity. The sides, back, and interior are left in plain silver, creating an elegant contrast with the sumptuous decoration on the lid.

Given its dimensions, this box can hold a standard deck of playing cards or King Size cigarettes. It can also serve as a jewelry box, a keepsake box, or a case for small precious items.

Condition:

Excellent condition. The enamel has retained all the intensity and richness of its colors. A few very fine, barely visible cracks are present in some areas of the enamel. The plain silver surfaces show slight scratches and normal signs of wear for their age. The set as a whole remains in excellent condition.

The box is sold empty. The playing cards and cigarettes are not included.
