Object description :

"Coalport Pembroke Chocolate Cup & Saucer, John Rose, 1810, Winged Harpy Handles, Hand-painted"

This stunning 1810 Coalport Pembroke chocolate cup and saucer, crafted by John Rose, is a fine example of early 19th-century porcelain. The set showcases exceptional craftsmanship, with vibrant hand-painted floral designs and rich blue accents, characteristic of the Coalport factory's renowned artistry.

The cup features striking mythological winged harpies as handles, adding an imaginative and dramatic touch to the piece. These detailed figures serve as both functional handles and artistic focal points. Gold gilding beautifully enhances the decoration, though there is some wear to the gilding, particularly around the handles and harpy figures.

The matching saucer is equally adorned with floral motifs and gilding. It is in excellent antique condition with only minor losses to the paint and gilding, consistent with age.

Dimensions:

  • Total Weight: 534 g

  • Cup Height: 12 cm / 4.7″

  • Cup Width: 14 cm / 5.5″

  • Cup Depth: 9.5 cm / 3.7″

  • Saucer Diameter: 15.5 cm / 6.1″

  • Saucer Height: 2.7 cm / 1.1″

Condition:

  • Cup: The decoration on the handle of the lid is broken, and there is a small chip on the edge of the lid (as shown in the photos). The gold gilding is worn, especially on the handles and winged harpy figures. Otherwise, the piece remains in excellent condition, with full preservation of the colors and enamel, thanks to its hand-painted nature.

  • Saucer: There are minor losses to the paint and gilding consistent with age, but overall, the saucer is in excellent antique condition.
