Antique French Old Paris Porcelain Cabinet Mug, Sèvres Style Green Ground, C.1850

A French Old Paris porcelain cabinet or presentation mug, made by an independent Paris porcelain workshop circa 1850. Old Paris is the collective name for porcelain made by numerous independent Paris workshops, rather than by the Royal Sèvres Manufactory itself. During the 19th century, these workshops supplied the luxury market with fashionable forms, vivid coloured grounds, hand-painted decoration and elaborate gilding.

The piece is executed in a Neoclassical and Rococo Revival Sèvres style. The decoration combines overglaze polychrome enamel painting of flowers with a rich green ground in the Sèvres manner. The white reserves are enclosed by scalloped, clock-face-like gilt cartouches and painted with cabbage roses, tulips, forget-me-nots, a large purple iris and other garden flowers.

The slightly flared cylindrical body stands on a substantial gilt foot rim and has an ornate Rococo Revival S-scroll handle moulded with overlapping leaves and gilt palmettes. Rich gilding continues around the rim, handle, foot and broad inner band. The underside bears a hand-painted gilt pattern number F 120. The unglazed base ring shows expected light age-related soiling and surface wear.

Dimensions: height 13.8 cm; width including handle 13 cm; weight 367 g. Condition: excellent antique condition. No structural cracks, chips or restorations. Minor rubbing and spotting to the gilding, together with fine age-related crazing visible at the base.
