Moser Bohemian Engraved Crystal Römer Goblet With Gilding, C.1860-1875
A rare antique Bohemian cut crystal Römer wine goblet, attributed to Moser, Karlovy Vary, circa 1860–1875. Formed from a notably heavy lead crystal blank, the goblet combines precise octagonal cutting, deep wheel engraving and restrained hand-applied gilding associated with the finest early Moser work.
Its architectural form initially recalls Baccarat. However, Baccarat adopted a characteristic six-sided foot for this type of goblet from 1841, while this example is consistently eight-sided through the bowl, baluster stem and stepped foot. This construction excludes Baccarat and points towards early Moser production.
The broad bowl is divided into eight vertical panels and decorated with a continuous wheel-engraved grapevine comprising leaves, grape clusters and curling tendrils. Fine gilded lines accent the engraving, rim, stem and foot without overwhelming the clear crystal.
In the 1860s Ludwig Moser obtained crystal blanks from the Harrach Glassworks at Nový Svět and completed their cutting, engraving and gilding in Karlovy Vary. The official factory history Moser Crystal Story: 1857-2017. 160 Years records a now-lost vine-engraved goblet formerly retained by the Moser family and described as "sadly missing today."
The close correspondence in form, weight, engraving and gilding makes it tempting to identify the present goblet with that documented design. Documentary proof is no longer available, but we believe it may be the same model or a closely related later version from the Moser workshop.
