Daisy Makeig-jones Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Green Butterfly Bowl, C.1920
A beautifully decorated Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl produced in England circa 1920. The bowl displays a rich mottled green exterior with emerald, olive and violet iridescent tones, decorated with gilded butterfly motifs and Greek Key ornament.
The Mother-of-Pearl Lustre interior is centred by a finely painted exotic bird, creating a striking contrast with the deep green exterior. The original mark and pattern number have largely worn away, although the decoration suggests a relationship to the documented Z4831 design.
Designed under the direction of Daisy Makeig-Jones, Fairyland Lustre remains among the most celebrated decorative achievements of twentieth-century Wedgwood. The iridescent surfaces change dramatically under different lighting conditions, making pieces such as this especially appealing to collectors.
