Large Chinese Carved Jadeite Figure With Lotus, Late Qing / Early Republic

A refined and substantial Chinese carved jadeite figure, dating to the late Qing / early Republic period, circa 1880–1920. The piece is carved from attractive pale green jadeite with warm honey-brown natural areas, creating a sophisticated colour balance that gives the sculpture both softness and visual depth.

The composition shows a young figure holding a lotus, enclosed within large carved leaves and flowing botanical forms. The lotus is a powerful Chinese symbol of purity, harmony and good fortune. In this carving the motif is handled with considerable imagination: the figure appears to rise from the surrounding leaves, creating a sculptural object that is interesting from every angle.

The workmanship is of high quality. The face, hands, robe folds, leaf veins and smaller plant details are carefully carved, while the natural tonal variation of the jadeite has been used as part of the design. The contrast between the pale green body of the figure and the warmer brownish leaf forms gives the piece a particularly elegant appearance. The stone also has very good translucency. When placed before a rear light source, the figure glows through the stone, enhancing the sense of depth and quality.

The carved wooden stand was specially made for the sculpture. Its openwork structure and plant motifs echo the botanical forms of the jadeite carving, giving the object a complete and highly decorative presentation. With a weight of 748 grams without the stand, this is a substantial piece rather than a light decorative souvenir.

The condition is very good. There is one neat repair to the lotus stem and a small discreet chip to the top of the lotus/stem. The main figure, face, hands, body, leaves and base of the carving are otherwise in excellent condition.
