Coalport, Turquoise Porcelain Stemmed Cup, Circa 1840–1850

Artist: Coalport

A large, elegant porcelain bowl on a foot, made of fine English porcelain, produced in Coalport, Shropshire, around 1840–1850, by the famous Coalport Porcelain Works, John Rose & Co. Founded by John Rose in 1795, the factory continued to operate under this name after his death in 1841.

The circular, shallow bowl features four lobed sections, two opposing openwork handles with scrollwork, and a deeply scalloped rim molded with foliage in the Rococo style. The interior rim is covered with a solid turquoise background, in a color palette inspired by the celestial blue of Sèvres. The white center is adorned with a small gilded floral motif. The hand-applied gilding highlights the openwork handles, the scrollwork reliefs, and the scalloped rim. The bowl rests on a baluster foot molded with acanthus leaves, raised foliage scrolls, and gilded details. The underside, with a white glaze, retains its central firing indentation. No manufacturer’s mark is visible.

With its dimensions, turquoise base, and rich rocaille modeling, this bowl is a fine example of mid-19th-century English decorative porcelain, serving both as a collector’s item and a centerpiece.
