German Kpm Berlin Rococo Revival Figural Double Salt Cellar, C.1870-1890

An elegant German Rococo Revival double salt cellar produced by the Royal Porcelain Factory (KPM Berlin), c.1870-1890. This finely sculpted porcelain table piece combines graceful modelling with beautifully preserved hand-painted decoration, making it an attractive example of late 19th-century Berlin porcelain.

Designed after the original models of the celebrated 18th-century sculptor Friedrich Elias Meyer, the composition centres on a charming putto forming the handle between 2 basket-shaped salt wells. Colourful songbirds, delicate insects and an additional bird vignette decorate the piece, while rich burnished gilding enhances the Rococo scrollwork and scalloped rims. Founded in 1763 by King Frederick II the Great of Prussia, KPM Berlin became one of Europe's finest porcelain manufactories, renowned for its exceptional hard-paste porcelain and academic hand-painting. The underside bears the authentic underglaze blue KPM scepter factory mark.
