Chinese Quartz And Agate Statuette Mounted On Wooden Base
Chinese quartz and agate statuette that could represent the goddess Chang-e, a character of Chinese mythology that is symbolized by the moon. Chang-e is frequently represented holding a vial in her hands which, in Chinese iconography, characterizes the filter of immortality. Chang-e is also considered the symbol of Yin, the feminine principle.
On this sculpture, the figure is also accompanied by a woodpecker which is carved pricking a tree trunk. In Chinese thought, it represents natural harmony and is the messenger of the health of the forest. It is also recognized as the strongest-willed animal in the animal kingdom, as it repeats its woodworking until it finds its food.
The group is mounted on a removable carved wooden base.
