Antique Kpm Berlin Gilt Porcelain Cup And Saucer, C.1840

Artist: Kpm

An elegant antique porcelain presentation cup and matching saucer produced by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory (KPM), Berlin, circa 1840. Finely made in hard-paste porcelain, the set is decorated with rich burnished and polished gilding on a white ground, featuring a fully gilt interior, gilt handle and refined beaded borders.

The front bears the German inscription, "Nie trübe Bitterkeit die Schale Deines Lebens" ("May bitterness never fill the cup of your life "), indicating that it was intended as a presentation or commemorative gift. Founded in 1763 by King Frederick II of Prussia, KPM became the official porcelain manufactory to the Prussian royal court and earned an international reputation for producing some of Europe's finest luxury porcelain.

The underglaze blue sceptre together with the iron-red imperial orb and KPM mark confirm manufacture by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin.
