Japanese Hirado Porcelain Chrysanthemum Inkwells, Pair, C.1850-1880
An elegant pair of antique Japanese Hirado porcelain inkwells dating to the late Edo or early Meiji period. Complete with their original porcelain inserts and chrysanthemum covers, they represent a fine example of Mikawachi craftsmanship.
The vivid cobalt decoration and exceptionally white porcelain body are characteristic of the finest Hirado production. The sculptural chrysanthemum ornament demonstrates the remarkable hand-modelling techniques that made these wares internationally admired during the nineteenth century.
Originally produced under the patronage of the Hirado domain, Mikawachi porcelain became one of Japan's most celebrated export ceramics. Complete matching pairs such as this are increasingly scarce.
