Chinese Amber Necklace With Carved Luohan Heads And Figural Pendant, C. 1870
Chinese amber necklace composed of eighteen individually carved luohan heads separated by spherical beads and finished with a sculptural pendant group. The carving is expressive and full of character, with deeply cut eyes, pronounced brows and occasionally grotesque facial expressions typical of traditional Chinese depictions of the Eighteen Luohan.
The amber displays rich natural variation ranging from deep cognac tones to lighter honey hues, with internal clouding visible within the translucent material. Such pieces reflect the decorative amber carving tradition of the late Qing dynasty.
The individuality of each carved head and the sculptural pendant make this necklace particularly appealing to collectors of Chinese amber and Buddhist art.
