Early Chinese Gilt-wood Temple Figure Of A Seated Civil Official On Stepped Plinth, South China
A rare and visually commanding Chinese temple sculpture dating from the mid-17th century, carved in the round and retaining its original polychrome surface. The figure, wearing a civil cap and long gilded robes, is seated upon a yoke-back throne above a cloud-mask apron and stylised shishi lions. The surface displays dense black-line floral decoration over gold leaf and red lacquer, typical of southern altarpiece production of the period.
The stepped plinth is constructed from joined end-grain billets, a hallmark of early craftsmanship. Heavy and stable, this work exhibits deep patination and clear devotional use.
